Words with Fathers
“Oh, the comfort – the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person – having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then with the breath of kindness, blow the rest away.”-Dinah Craik
As we celebrate Father’s Day weekend, I can’t imagine many blessings greater than that of having a father who has the capacity to listen, understand, and then respond with just the right words. Having your dad as your go-to guy when you need to work something out is a stabilizing force critical in one’s life.
When it comes to dads and conversation though, we probably have as varied a list of experiences as we do dads. Some of us have fathers who always relate the present situation back to their generation.
“When I was your age we had to know we were going. There was no computer in our car telling us when to turn.”
Others of us have dads who handle the challenges of family life with humor.
“Sure, we can get a dog….as soon as the Flyers win the Stanley Cup.”
And then there are those of us, myself included, who have dads of few, if any words. Many of my inquiries to my dad were answered with “Ask your mother” or a shrug of the shoulders.
So if you are lucky enough to talk to your dad this weekend, or will just be remembering him and the words that were or were not spoken between the two of you, honor him and enjoy this special day.
