William Carl Stein

William Carl Stein (Bill), age 65, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 14, 2020.  Bill is survived by his five loving children, Pam Huckel (Casey), Melissa Walker (Dan), Ashley Stein (Patrick),  William Stein (fiance Ashley), and Breanna Stein.  Bill,  also known as Pop Pop, is further survived by his most precious eleven grandchildren.  He will also be deeply missed by his siblings: Debbie Marsden (Joe), Gary Stein, Susan Welsh (Jack), and Gregg Stein (Janet) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his lovely mother, Elizabeth, and his winsome father, Carl.

Bill was born on February 16, 1955 in Philadelphia to Carl and Elizabeth (Gebhardt) Stein.  The family later moved to the local suburb of Oreland where he lived before returning to Philadelphia as an adult.  Bill attended Bishop McDevitt High School and was a graduate of the class of 1973. Throughout his middle and high school years he played on several local league basketball teams and was noted as one of their best players.  He also enjoyed playing the saxophone and always spoke fondly of his band memories.  Bill was employed as both a warehouse worker and supervisor for a variety of companies.  He was hard-working, a friendly and loyal workmate, and a great support to his family.  Bill was handy with small repairs and cars, always ready with his tools to lend a helping hand.

Bill loved movies and could be found watching, sitting on the edge of his seat, coffee in hand, laughing out loud, amongst his beloved family.  He also looked forward to Eagles’ games and enjoyed talking about the players and highlights of the game just as much, if not more.  He was also fond of playing the lottery with his own unique system of numbers and patterns.

Bill was a family man and was most happy at home, surrounded by his children and grandchildren.  They were his joy.  It has been said that if Bill wasn’t with his children, he was likely talking about them with love and pride in his eyes.  On any given day, he could be found helping out his children, joking around with his grandkids, or bouncing a grandbaby on his knee with a big smile on his face.  Bill loved to laugh and even more to make others laugh.  Rarely did he not share a familiar song or witty joke with those blessed to be in his presence.  He was known as a happy, fun-loving, sweet, and caring man and will always be remembered for his kind eyes, infectious smile, and jolly temperament.  Bill had the uncanny ability to brighten even a stranger’s day with his sincerity, big heart, compassionate spirit, and true generosity.  If you knew him, you felt at ease around him through his peaceful, calm, and gentle demeanor.  He truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; spending time with family, enjoying homemade food, and being grateful and content with what he had.  Little did he think of himself, but much more about how he could help another, even if just through the simple gift of a smile or acknowledging another’s presence.  Bill was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by so many.  May we continue to live out his legacy of love to one another as we honor his death.

No funeral or memorial service is immediately planned.  The family will notify loved ones in the future when a service is scheduled.  Memorial contributions made in William Stein’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
