Maureen Ann Kelly Moroney – May 6, 1945- December 20, 2020

How do you surmise a life that was as brilliant, unique, loving and beautiful as Maureen Moroney’s? You don’t. You can’t. The pain we feel today is ineffable. 

Maureen Ann Moroney (nee) Kelly was born on May 6, 1945 in Philadelphia. Daughter of Elizabeth Clark (nee Hugues) and Jack Kelly. She attended St. Francis de Sales grade school and West Catholic High School for Girls, graduating in 1963. She taught second graders at St. Lucy’s in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia and attended St. Joseph’s University in the evenings. She married Richard Gillette Levering Jr. in 1967 in Philadelphia and joined him in his service to the USAF in Biloxi, Mississippi and the United Kingdom. Maureen gave birth to her Daughter Kimberly Ann in 1972 and her son Richard Gillette in 1978. The couple divorced in 1982 in Lafayette Hill, PA. 

Maureen reconnected with her one and only true love, Patrick Moroney Sr. in 1990 after seeing each other again at a West Catholic High School reunion. They knew the moment they laid eyes on each other that they would be together for the rest of their lives. The couple married on November 23, 1991 in Blue Bell, PA. They recently celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary. 

Everyone who knew Maureen knew that she had one of the biggest hearts of anyone they had ever met. She carried a birthday book with her and remembered every single friend and family member’s birthdays – always mailing a card or dropping off a gift. She even remembered her dry cleaner’s birthday – that was just the kind of tremendous person she was.She was never without a word of encouragement or good will – she made those around her happy. 

After her teaching career ended Maureen launched her first entrepreneurial endeavor – Tisket a Tasket (a fruit and wine basket) business before moving into the position of Director of Sales and Marketing for Lily Langry’s Showplace and Dinner Theater at the Sheraton Valley Forge Hotel. She carried that title to the Valley Forge Convention and Visitors Bureau before creating her next business, B.A. Associates- a meeting planning and special event company- which she ran from 1988 until 2019. She was among the first women to earn her CMP (certified meeting planning) certificate. For a short time during the late 80’s she moved to Waltham, Massachusetts and while there taught meeting planning to graduate students at Bentley University. 

Socially, Maureen was a natural gatherer, always hosting special occasions in her home. Whenever she had an opportunity to bring people together she did. And she did it throughout her life- primarily in the home that she loved and shared with her husband Pat on Lenmar Drive in Blue Bell, PA. She loved Philadelphia with a passion as well. It will always be HER city –  referring to it fondly as the jewelbox of the Northeast. 

Maureen was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer in July 2020. She was a fighter until the end and died in her Christmas bedroom in Blue Bell, PA on Sunday, December 20, 2020 at the age of 75 surrounded by family. Maureen is survived by her husband Pat, daughter Kimberly Cummings (nee Levering), son Richard Gillette Levering III, siblings Elizabeth Donnelly (nee) Kelly, Michael Clark, Mary Kelley (nee Clark), Francis Clark Jr. and Jacqueline F. Griffin (nee Clark) along with numerous nieces/nephews and great nieces/nephews, her son-in-law Christopher Cummings and her future daughter-in-law, Sara Schuenemann. 

A celebration of life is being planned for May 8, 2021 two days after what would have been her 76 birthday in Philadelphia (more details to come). Maureen loved the Valley Green section of Fairmount Park in Philadelphia – it was her lifelong happy place. There we hope to place an installation of some kind in her honor this spring.
