Died suddenly on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at the age of 71.
Elmer was a lifelong resident of the Frankford section in Northeast Philadelphia.
After high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served his country as a
Corporal in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968 in the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st
Marine Division. His occupational specialty was in communications as a Field Radio Operator.
He was awarded the Purple Heart for being wounded in action. He was a proud Veteran and is
a member of The American Legion and VFW Post 3020.
After serving his country, he worked in several industries but his dedication was the newspaper
business. He started at the Philadelphia Journal as a Circulation Supervisor achieving top sales
in his district multiple times. After they closed, he got a position at the Philadelphia Inquirer in
the transportation department delivering newspapers everyday around the city. He worked for
the Inquirer for 27 years before retirement after he suffered a massive stroke. He described this
job as the “best time” he ever had, he loved driving. He is a member of the Teamsters Union
Local 628 where he continued to attend meetings and events with the Retirees Club.
He enjoyed retirement by spending time with his family and young grandchildren. He was a very
generous man. He was a prankster, loved telling jokes, and had an infectious laugh. He
survived prostate cancer, but years after his stroke his health began to take a toll and daily
tasks proved to be more challenging.
He is preceded in death by his father, Elmer L. Horn, Sr., and his mother Anna V. Horn
(Blackiston). He is survived by his loving wife, Eileen (Markert). Father of John Browning (Tara),
Joseph Browning (Gina), Gina Osborn (Ken), Katie Ann Lucas (Jacob), Kristy Meenan (Mike).
Grandfather “P-Pop” of Tiffany, Kathleen, Melissa, Joseph, Mike, Samantha, Nicholas, John,
Kelsey, Tyler, Hailey, Emily, and 9 great-grandchildren.
Please join the Horn family after 1:30 pm, Sunday September 16 at Delaware Valley Cremation Center 7350 State Road Philadelphia, PA 19136 for a gathering of remembrance in honoring and celebrating Elmer’s life. The memorial tribute service will begin promptly at 3:30 with time for refreshments and fellowship immediately afterwards, from around 4:00 until 5:00 pm, where Elmer’s wife and family will be accessible to receive the loving comfort of your condolences, remembrances and support.
Military Funeral Honors will be held Monday, 9/17 promptly at 10:30am at WashingtonCrossing National Cemetery 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA 18940. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project.
