Age 90, Mrs. Sweetser passed away peacefully on March 18, 2018 at the hospice at Chandler Hall, Newtown, PA.
Doris is survived by her daughter Betsy Sweetser, Yardley, PA, her son Jamie Sweetser and his wife Ellen Goldman Sweetser, Rockaway, NJ and her son Dan Sweetser and his wife, Liz McCormick Sweetser, Langhorne PA, as well as six grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Connor, Rachel, Jack and Will Sweetser, and many many friends.
For more than twelve years, Doris happily made her home at Chelsea at East Brunswick, an assisted living community, where she had an abundance of friends among the residents and staff. There she enjoyed operating the retail store and participated in many activities, always with a big smile and much enthusiasm.
Prior to residing at The Chelsea, Doris lived for many years at LeisureTowne, Southampton, NJ. There too Doris made lasting friendships. One of her great pleasures was singing for the residents of LeisureTowne at concerts and events such as Veterans and Memorial Day. Doris had a beautiful strong soprano voice that brought joy to all who listened.
Before LeisureTowne, Doris raised her children in Cliffwood Lake, Stockholm, NJ and Bergenfield, NJ. While living in Bergenfield, she was for many years a member of and soloist at the Teaneck Chorus, which performed at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Doris was a career woman, managing a retail toy store, Youth at Play, on Madison Avenue in New York City for about three decades. Jacqueline Kennedy, John -John Kennedy, Woody Allen, and many other prominent New Yorkers were her customers.
Doris’ family and friends will remember her for her huge heart, her warm and welcoming personality and her beautiful singing voice. In addition to music, Doris loved the ocean, dogs, feeding the birds, people watching, good food, crossword puzzles, old movies, TV mysteries, her knick-knacks and her plants. She was the matriarch of her family and will be greatly missed.
In accordance with Doris’ wishes, a private celebration of her life will take place at the Chelsea.
